ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - Connor McDavid won dinner from Erie Otters teammate Dylan Strome, Bobby Orr won $100 from Don Cherry and Travis Konecny may have earned some better draft considerations from his impressive showing at the CHL top prospects game.Konecny scored two goals and forced the turnover that led to another. Konecny of the Ontario Hockey Leagues Ottawa 67s skated with Connor McDavid and Timo Meier, and that line was a huge reason why Team Orr beat Team Cherry 6-0 at Meridian Centre on Thursday night. Its definitely not hard playing with those two guys, Konecny said. They make it easy for everyone around them, and youve just got to wait and when the puck hits your stick you just put it on the net.Ranked 26th among North American skaters on NHL Central Scoutings midterm list, Konecny was the best in off-ice testing Wednesday and then stood out again in the game playing with and against his peers. He said he wasnt out to prove anything.I think every player in their draft year wants to prove to everyone that they can be the best they can be, the London, Ont., native said. I try not to look at the rankings and Im just going to do what I can do get a team to like me and just hope I can get as high as I can.Konecny scored on a semi-breakaway, beating Owen Sound goaltender Michael McNiven high glove side and then on a give-and-go with Meier. He had the big hit that helped get McDavid the puck on Meiers goal, the second of the night for Team Orr.Defenceman Ryan Pilon and forwards Nathan Noel and Paul Bittner scored for the team coached by Boston Bruins legend Bobby Orr. Goaltenders Nick McBride of the Western Hockey Leagues Prince Albert Raiders and Liam Herbst of the 67s combined for the shutout.Strome had a strong game for Team Cherry and was that sides player of the game. McDavid won the side bet of dinner, and most importantly to Strome, the game.Id much rather win the game and not get that award, Strome said. Id much rather be hoisting that trophy right now than getting whatever prize I got.Samuel Montembeault of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey Leagues Blainville-Boisbriand Armada stopped 15-of-17 shots he faced, and McNiven made eight saves.McDavid showed off flashes of the speed and skill that will make him the top pick in Junes NHL draft. He finished with one assist. It went all right, McDavid said. Obviously the team did very well and its nice to get the win. Personally I thought it was all right. I had a couple chances that I wish I couldve buried, but it really doesnt matter.Konecny said the little things McDavid did to open up ice for him and Meier shouldnt go unnoticed. One thing Cherry noticed was McDavid taking his foot off the gas when the game was a blowout.I saw where he couldve taken some shots — showing mercy to us, Cherry said. I really believe when he got up 4-0 that he let up. Im not saying hes Bobby Orr, but Bobby used to do the same thing. When wed be up 5-1 or something like that, you could see him back off. McDavid looked pretty good. With NHL arenas dark for the first night of the all-star break, the CHL top prospects game took centre stage in the hockey world. Over 200 scouts from all 30 NHL teams were in attendance to see 40 of the best draft-eligible prospects playing major junior hockey.Theres people watching every game, so you just got to block it out as much as you can, Strome said. Obviously there was a big pile of people in the corner there, but other than that I just tried to focus on the game.Prime Minister Stephen Harper was also in the building. Harper spoke to players before the game and tweeted that he got an autographed jersey from McDavid, who signed it on Orrs back.It was McDavids first time meeting Harper, and he said it was awesome to be able to sign a jersey for the Prime Minister.Notes — There was a moment of silence before the game to honour the memory of RCMP Constable David Wynn. ... Former Niagara IceDogs star and current New York Islanders forward Ryan Strome was part of the pregame ceremonies along with members of Cpl. Nathan Cirillos regiment.---Follow @SWhyno on Twitter (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Antonio Spurs will try to even their series with the Dallas Mavericks Monday night when the two teams collide at American Airlines Arena for Game 4. The Mavericks took a 2-1 lead in their Western Conference first round series with a dramatic 109-108 home win Saturday. The venerable Vince Carter nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Mavs the lead in a series they could easily be up 3-0 if not for a major drought at the conclusion of Game 1. Catching an inbound pass from Jose Calderon on the left sideline, Carter pump- faked Manu Ginobili in the corner and let the shot fly as he fell out of bounds. After it went in, Carter stomped on the court and was mobbed by teammates. Dirk Nowitzki put him in a headlock. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban rushed to give him a hug. However, Dallas is already focusing on Game 4. "I think its behind us now," Carter said following Sundays practice. "It was just a great opportunity. I mean, it was just great to come in and everybody was like, Hey, man, it still was a great shot. But once practice started we kind of put that past us and we prepped ourselves for tomorrow, because this is just as big as Game 3." Carter finished with 11 points on Saturday. Monta Ellis led the Mavericks with 29 points, followed by 18 from Nowitzki. Calderon chipped in 16 and Samuel Dalembert gave Dallas a lift with 13 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. Tim Duncans 22 led the way for the Spurs. Tony Parker netted 19 and Kawhi Leeonard finished with 17.dddddddddddd Tiago Splitter registered a double-double with 14 points and 13 boards, while Ginobili managed 12. As focused as the Mavericks are for Game 4, the Spurs were as pragmatic about what happened at the end of Game 3. "Vince made a shot. Manu guarded him, he did it well and Vince made a shot," said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. "Give him credit. There was no breakdown or anything like that. Manu was right there and he did everything he could. Vince knocked it down." Ellis, who had 12 points in the fourth quarter, hit a 3-pointer to give Dallas a lead with 6 1/2 minutes left, then a jumper the next time down the court. Later, another jumper cut San Antonios lead to one. Ellis three-point play after he was fouled on a baseline shot tied the score at 102-102 with 70 seconds remaining. Boris Diaw knocked down a baseline jumper for the Spurs but Ellis came through for the Mavericks again, tying the game with 24.9 ticks remaining on a one- handed runner. Ginobili drove around Shawn Marion at the other end and made his go-ahead bank shot over Dalembert. Then, Carter made his 3-pointer to give Dallas the win. The Spurs had won 10 in a row over the Mavs prior to the Game 2 loss. Now, theyre staring at a very difficult situation, should they lose Game 4 on Monday night. San Antonio could be the sixth No. 1 seed to lose to an eighth seed in the first round. The Spurs fell to the Memphis Grizzlies in this situation three years ago. Game 5 will be Wednesday night in San Antonio. ' ' '
